Models with Properties
A documentary model
Models with Properties is the second instantiation in Spinagu’s project series Rooms that Miss the Point, an ongoing investigation into the the perception and production of views across a spectrum of historical and contemporary visual systems. The project series takes as its starting point the history of scenographic production as it intersects with forms of architectural display, including viewing technologies such dioramas, perspective boxes, Ames rooms, as well as contemporary genres such as the documentary model, digital environments, and the digital screen. The series studies and reconstructs a single image across
a number of instantiations in order to study the entanglement of material and digital procedures. This second instantiation reexamines the standard hotel room through the production of a developed surface model. Unlike the developed surface drawing, which absorbs all furnishings, moldings, drapery, and ornament of the interior room into the taut flatness of the pictorial plane (while simultaneously emptying the center room of these same objects), the developed surface model allows the room to retain its material artifacts — to remain thickened by its furnishings, lighting appendages, and wall attachments.
