The courtyard for Craft Contemporary transforms the 2,550 square feet outdoor space along Wilshire Boulevard into a shaded center within the city. A perforated canopy stretches overhead to filter the intense Los Angeles sun into a soft pattern of light and shadow. As the day shifts, the courtyard changes with it, rendering time visible across the day. Shade is treated as a shared resource, offering comfort and pause in a neighborhood defined by heat, traffic, and exposure. At its center is a woven canopy that alludes to the textile arts, echoing the museum’s program through material technique. The structure weaves strips of fabric to create a sense of enclosure without heaviness. Along the edges, an acoustic curtain softens street noise while a simple grid wall supports display and making, allowing the space to host workshops, markets, and gatherings. The design does not impose a fixed use; instead, it provides a gentle framework that invites participation and flexibility. The courtyard becomes an open, generous room—one that supports craft and community through attention to climate, material, utility, and the everyday experience of being together outdoors.
